No Maps On My Taps: (58 mins, color 1979) Film by George Nierenberg. With Chuck Green, Bunny Briggs, and Sandman Sims. This film offers unique insight into jazz tap dancing as an indigenous American art form. The spirit of tap in its heyday, shown in rare photos and Hollywood film clips of the 1930's, provides a backdrop for intimate portraits of three surviving "hoofers." This film is a historical record of this distinctly American dance form. Contact:

Honi Coles: The Class Act of Tap. (documentary)
Honi Coles: The Class Act Of Tap is a 57-minute documentary film produced by Susan Pollard, directed by Jim Swenson, edited by George Hood and completed in January 1994. This film is being distributed by VedeFilm Producers International of New York and it features historical footage of the vaudeville era in which Honi grew up, including clips with the masters John Bubbles and Bill Robinson. The slow soft shoe is also featured with Honi dancing with partner Cholly Atkins. It includes historical scenes of early Honi Coles dance numbers. The film also features performances by many current tap stars who are Honi Coles admirers.
Producer Susan Pollard intended the film to be a loving tribute to Honi and his lifetime contribution to dance and theater. It captures his legacy of tap artistry passed on to him from the generation that came before, artistry which he has now passed on to several successive generations. It has recently received some airplay on local PBS affiliate stations often with the Nicholas Brothers documentary "We Sing, We Dance."
-
We Sing, We Dance: The Nicholas Brothers (documentary)
A documentary telling the story of the Nicholas Brothers, Harold and Fayard. Includes many clips of their flash style which included diving splits as well as finely honed close footwork. Includes short clips from the films "Stormy Weather" and "Flying Down to Rio." Jaw dropping performances! Interspersed with interviews with the brothers and other dancers. This one hour documentary has recently been shown on local PBS affiliates around the country sometimes in tandem with the "Honi Coles: The Class Act of Tap" documentary. [It was put out by Picture Music International which is at 20 Manchester Square, London, W1A 1ES, United Kingdom]

Tap Dance In America
The PBS "Dance In America" series had a show devoted to tap narrated by Gregory Hines. It included several masters as well as today's artists. It had rehearsals and discussions between artists and ended with performances by tap groups and solo artists covering many different styles. I'm not sure if it is available for purchase. It may be rebroadcast during fund-raising drives. Set your VCRs.

Tap Dancing For Beginners with Henry LeTang (instructional): This tape has Henry LeTang as instructor and an adult female student as demonstrator. LeTang was the choreographer for several Broadway shows and the movie "Cotton Club."
The video uses two cameras. One is straight on showing full figure. Occasionally, during a repetition of a step the second camera shows the student's right side from below the knee to the floor. This setup makes it very easy to follow and get a step. LeTang teaches four eight measure timesteps that comprise his beginner's routine. [I put the routine in my notation of the SHIM SHAM on the Tap Steps page.]
As an added bonus the tape begins with the late Honi Coles dancing during opening credits. An intermediate level tap dancer can watch this and try to steal some steps! Honi dances a few timesteps with the student at the end of the tape also. (A Simple Timestep and a Triple Timestep.) [MULTD]

Tap Work-Out (instructional):
Steve Condos called these steps "learning the rudiments." The camera is full figure and straight on. The dancing is in-place with numerous syncopated variations performed to a clicking metronome. Continuous clean tapping, sliding, etc. for 40 minutes with Steve calling the moves and the count.
This would be a good tape for an intermediate level dancer. Because this project took a tap workout as its premise the metronome stays at one speed and the close footwork only is varied. A good tape to learn how to find a groove and work with it. [NOTE: Workout video currently unavailable Oct. '98]
Another Steve Condos 2-tap video set, "Accents," includes video clips of interviews, classes and performances. Clips range from early Condos Brothers performance to Steve's final performance in Lyon, France. Good for a tapper's tap library. Available from:

"TURNS FOR TAP" with Charles Kelley (instructional)
[from the Performer's Edge Magazine] Here's another great teaching video to further enhance your tap technique and routines... TURNS for the beginner through advanced dancer. Producer/Director Bob Rizzo presents this new instructional video on over 50 turns for tap dancing taught by the legendary Charles Kelley. From simple Step turns, Maxie Ford turns and Cramproll turns to Barrell-roll and Windmill turns. There is something for every level; traveling, circling and spot combinations as well as a few "specialty" turns for those more advanced routines. Mr. Kelley demonstrates each turn in its simplest form without music (so the tap technique can be clearly heard), then his dancers repeat the turn with musical accompaniment.
"TURNS FOR TAP" runs 45 minutes. An accompanying manual featuring all the material on the video and more is also available. Available through Riz-Biz Productions, 163 West 80th St., Suite 8, New York, NY 10024. (800) 869-3506. Call or write for free brochure. Dealer inquiries welcome. - [pt. 2, slow-med 4/4] This lovely chorus, though deceptively simple and often executed by Honi Coles and the Copasetics in a comic fashion, is a dance of graceful movement and beautiful rhythmic patterns.
-
