Promoting the understanding, preservation, and development of tap dance as an art form.

What Is The International Tap Association?

Founded in 1987 at the Colorado Dance Festival to serve the needs of tap's art and artists, the International Tap Association (ITA) has established advocacy programs and special projects to educate dance professionals and the public about tap, helping it to take its respected place in the larger world of dance. By providing information to producers, the ITA has encouraged the creation of new venues and touring circuits - increasing performance opportunities that benefit both audiences and artists. The ITA assists in preserving this American art, once in danger of being lost, by encouraging archival documentation and research as well as by serving as a clearing house for the media, producers, scholars, educators, and artists.

As an organization, the ITA encourages tap dancers and devotees to unite and collectively work for positive solutions. We invite you to join us in this quest and to enjoy the many personal benefits of ITA membership.

Who Belongs To The ITA?

The ITA is open for membership to tap dancers, choreographers, teachers, students, critics, historians, fans, friends, and anyone interested in tap dance. ITA's 850 members in 28 countries and 47 states plus the District of Columbia currently span this entire spectrum. Members range from tap's legendary artists to new tap students to long time fans to those across the globe introducing this art form to new audiences.

Why Join The ITA?

National Tap Dance Day

International Tap Association members played a pivotal role in the establishment of National Tap Dance Day, as proclaimed by the Congress of the United States. Now celebrated annually on May 25, ITA members and regional groups sponsor many of the celebrations that take place around the world.

The ITA is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Capezio/Ballet Makers Dance Foundation, and through memberships and contributions from people like you.
