International Tap Association

What Is The International Tap Association?

The International Tap Association's (ITA) mission is "to promote the understanding, preservation, and development of tap dance as an art form." The ITA is open for membership not only to tap dancers, but to anyone interested in tap.

Through advocacy programs and special projects, the ITA educates dance professionals and the public about tap as an art form, helping tap take its respected place in the larger world of dance. The ITA encourages the creation of new performance venues and touring circuits, and the informed presentation of tap dance, which helps increase job opportunities. By encouraging a variety of serious archival documentations and tap research, nationally and locally, the ITA assists in preserving and American art once in danger of being lost. As an organization, the ITA encourages tap dancers to unite, to define the dancers' goals and problems specific to tap dance, and collectively to work for positive solutions.

The ITA is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Capezio/Ballet Makers, and by contributions from members, individuals like you.

The ITA welcomes your comments and information requests. Feel free to use our Feedback/Request Form below or e-mail us directly at ita@tapdance.org.

ITA Newsletter

The ITA has some back issues available for purchase.

The ITA publishes a great newsletter for members. It includes feature articles (often interviews with tap masters), synopses of recent events, descriptions of upcoming events, a center page calendar, tips, techniques and a listing of ITA representatives around the world to contact about tap in your area. Support advertisements provide information on tap supplies, books, etc

I've included a sample ITA newsletter, 279K (Jan/Feb '95) with this WWW page. It features fieldnotes and feature articles. Please note the newsletter layout normally uses three columns and inserts photos, sidebars, etc. in a more pleasing format. I've tried to work with the constraints of WWW display here. The opening photograph is full page in the newsletter. I've kept the size of photos small to reduce access times. Articles included are the copyright of the authors. (PJC)
