What Is The International Tap Association? Serving over 1000 members in 28 countries, the International Tap Association, the world’s only service organization for tap, provides a variety of benefits to its members who range from first time tappers and fans to the most extraordinary artists of our time (for example, ITA member Jimmy Slyde was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, Robert L. Reed Jr. just won the Sammy Davis Jr. Award, and Jason Samuels Smith just received an Emmy for Outstanding Choreography). ITA’s founding honorary chairman was Honi Coles and honorary president was Gregory Hines. Membership benefits include access to grant funding, discounts, a clearing house, and the 64-68 page magazine, On Tap, the only worldwide magazine dedicated to tap, and much more. The ITA promotes the understanding, preservation, and development of tap dance as an art form. Our aims are to: EDUCATE people about tap as an art form. Through advocacy programs and special projects, the ITA EDUCATES dance professionals and the public about tap as an art form, helping tap take its respected place in the larger world of dance. The ITA ENCOURAGES the creation of new performance venues and touring circuits, and the informed presentation of tap dance, which helps increase job opportunities. By encouraging a variety of serious archival documentations and tap research, nationally and locally, the ITA assists in PRESERVING an American art once in danger of being lost. With its representatvies throughout the world, the ITA ESTABLISHES support mechanisms and communication networks for tap. As an organization, the ITA encourages tap dancers to UNITE, to define the dancers' goals and problems specific to tap dance, and collectively to work for positive solutions. The ITA has an international network of representatives - living on each continent except Antarctica - who report on tap activities in the ITA’s magazine On Tap. Of the current 40 representatives, 22 live in the United States, 8 in Europe, 1 in South America, 1 in Africa, 2 in Asia, 1 in Australia, and the remaining 5 in Canada and Mexico. Contact information for representatives can be found in the back of each issue of On Tap. The ITA is made possible in part by support from the National Endowment for the Arts, So'Danca, Inc., Boulder Arts Commission, StorageTek, Express Press, the Antioch Independence Fund of Fidelity Investments Charitable Gift Fund, and through memberships and by individual contributions from people like you!
