Getting Around

Overview

This is a support page for the Tap Dance Homepage. There are always shows to see and workshops to attend for the tap fan. This is a collection of online resources to help get you there. (If you have a useful resource you've used in travel, complete the Feedback Form.)

I live near and work in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the US. There are shows in New York and Washington, D.C. I've attended. I'll include my itineraries below as an example of getting to a show or workshop. Note: there are travel health resources on the Healthy Dancing page.

To New York City from Philly

I went to see Riverdance at Radio City Music Hall awhile back with my sister and nephew. Tickets ordered by phone with Ticketmaster (who else?) A friend suggested taking the bus. I used Peter Pan Trailways which left Center City Phila. and had one stop in New Jersey before arriving at the Port Authority Terminal. I purchased the tickets ahead (for a slight discount) and it was unreserved seating. We arrived early. Since we live outside the city near Lansdale we took a commuter train. Show and travel totalled about $70. There are also bus routes to Boston and Washington, D.C. Here is the itinerary (it was a long day):

 9:20 leave house
9:49 train to Phila. from Lansdale
10:40 train arrives in Market East Station
        (2 block walk to bus.)
11:00 bus leaves for New York City
1:00 arrive Port Authority terminal in NYC
2:00 Riverdance matinee at Radio City Music Hall
 5:00 bus returns to Phila.
 7:00 bus arrives in Phila.
 7:25 train returns to Lansdale
 8:10 arrive in Lansdale
 8:30 arrive home

I took another alternate route to NYC for a server workshop. I drove to Trenton, New Jersey, parked, and took the NJT train to Grand Central Station (below Madison Square Garden.)

To Washington, D.C. from Philly

I went to Washington for a rare film showing. The Library of Congress showed "No Maps on My Taps" (with Bunny Briggs, Chuck Green, and Sandman Sims) and "The Jazz Hoofer: Baby Laurence." The show was free with travel and parking about $80. I used Amtrak's Northeast Direct service. I called and reserved a round-trip ticket for pick-up prior to boarding (cash or credit). There is also service to New York City and Boston. I drove and parked by 30th Street Station and took the subway to work in the morning. I printed a neighborhood map from the Library of Congress Web site. Here is the itinerary:

2:30 leave work, take subway to 30th Street Station.
3:15 train scheduled to leave. There was a problem.
3:45 train leaves for Washington, D.C. with four stops
        before Union Station.
5:45 arrive in Union Station. Man! What a huge, gorgeous
place. I needed directions to get to the street.
6:15 arrived at Library of Congress after 8 block walk.
7:00 films shown with discussion after each.
10:00 train leaves Union Station for Phila.
12:00 arrive in Phila. for drive home to Lansdale.
 1:15 arrive home.

Both were day trips, which can be done if you have the enthusiasm and stamina...
